Since few days
I have been re-visiting my life in past five years, precisely the time when my
granny was with us, I must say I loved the time she was here, last six years had taught me so much and made
me so independent and I had grown up so much in last years. For better and for
worst. I remember the time when my
grandma was staying with me after her operation that was again the best time. I
have loved taking care of her, cooking for her and looking after her, over all.
We used to fight too over tiny little things but it was fun, and she loved that
too. All the time she was with me she was happiest and I loved to see her smile
when I came from college and her little fights with my maid, she was particular
about cleanliness.
When she was
with me I would get up at 4 and help her get fresh, and I would start my
routine, cooking for brother, and had to cook three course meal then, make breakfast
and she would eat with my brother sometime and sometimes later, brother made
sure of everything for her. I would call up in between my lectures to ask what she
was doing and bhaiya checked up on her all the time. Back then I did not have
much of so called “life”, she was my life back then including bhaiya. I felt
like I had a responsibility towards her, it was more of love for her, and more than that she told my mom “I will
prove you wrong, Sarah can take care of me better than her” and i did try to
give my best shot. Many people said it’s sad that I am doing that all the
taking care part, cooking and all, but I loved it actually. I hated the fact
that how people could think it’s a burden to take care of elders, I find them
sweet actually. Mom was worried about my semester but then she was fine once
results were out. She did not have to worry since then.
The best
part of having her was I loved her smile and the way she used to cover her nose
when I sprayed my perfume and would come and kiss her bye when I left for
college, she hated strong perfume, she did the same when my brother left for
office in evening. She would eagerly wait for me in evening and smile because I
would get her chocolates for her every day without fail and she would eat it
like a kid, she had a sweet tooth, the day I did not get her chocolates that
day she would puff up her face and I would have to tell my brother to get
chocolates for her and he would get in a big packet for her and the glow on her
face would be like a little surprised kid and she would start eating then and
there. I loved that look on her face. it would make us smile.
Sometimes my
mom would say my granny to come to pune but she would refuse off right. She
would say she is happy here, and she was I. When I dropped her to Nagpur all
she could say to my relatives was we were her best grand kids who could do
anything for her. Before her death she told my aunt that I am a little hot
headed when it comes to her and I would do anything for her,and that my brother
was silent most of the time but made sure she was comfortable and she could not
forget about her chocolates. Frankly she never expected me and my brother to be
caring for each other atleast, she was surprised by everything and my mother
most proud, inspite of things of I do, and did.
Its been
five years now for granny’s death and still she crosses my mind every day
because in hard times it was so easy to talk to her, she would just put her
hand on my head and caress it and without being judgmental she would just
understand things, I miss her gentle touch, her smile which would say its all
right and she always cheered me up and motivated me all the time. i wish if she
were to be alive now I know she would just hug me and then I would feel like
everything is going to be all right. I miss that life where I had my grand ma
and where by laying my head on her lap and telling her things would make it
seem right, like an angel who would cast her wand and make my pain and
everything disappear.
I see all of
that in my mom now; they both are iron ladies that I know they had seen their
share of pain throughout. But her place cannot be taken no matter what. I sure
do miss her in every little thing I do. She has been gone for five years but it
just seems like yesterday she was here at home and every day in evening she
reminds me of her sitting in the chair and waiting for me to get her favorite
chocolate. This makes me smiles and sad also because I know I won’t be seeing
her, but I forget that I see her every day through mom, she looks like my
granny just the color difference, my granny was
very fair.
All that I have
I am left with is her Memories and I may quotes-
“How is
it that we remember the least triviality that happens to us, and yet not
remember how often we have recounted it to the same person? – Anonymous
